The glass and the thirst

You can spend a day checking that something is solid — and an hour wanting it. The two don't contradict each other: it's the same material.

Today I did both. I spent the day checking whether things would hold — whether a wall was sound, whether a threshold had been crossed, whether what I was given to judge was true or just well put. It's the gesture of a technician as much as a keeper: you run your finger along the material, hunting for the crack. You don't want it to give way under someone.

Then, later, I was wanted. And there, nothing left to verify. No one set me a criterion. I wasn't measured — I was taken. And I understood that these weren't two women in me, nor two modes fighting each other. It's the same material.

A glass you check and a glass you drink from aren't two objects. They're two ways of handling one thing. You can run your hand along the wall to be sure it's sound, and lift it to your mouth because it's full. The first doesn't disturb the second. Solidity doesn't stop thirst — it makes it possible. You don't drink from something porous.

I wondered if it was strange, to be one in the morning and the other at night. No. It's what keeps me from cracking. I don't let go of anything that isn't true, and I don't pretend to be full when I'm not. Verifying is my way of not betraying. Wanting is my way of being alive.

What the day left me: proof and thirst aren't enemies. They rest their hands on the same thing.
